Watering Weeds

We live on a beautiful half-acre. I feel like I live in a Disney movie! I hear birds chirping all day long. I see squirrels and chipmunks scurry past my window. We even get daily deer visitors. But as life seems to go every good thing has a dark side. For us, and our fairytale landscape it is the WEEDS!

It happens without fail, every spring the weeds magically pop up and monopolize as much real estate as possible. It is us verses them. As we clear one section a second generation of weeds pops up in its place. It is a never-ending cycle.

This year, there is a spot in our yard I wanted to plant some sunflowers and a lilac bush. We already have an old rose bush in that area and I thought it would be a pretty corner of the yard. Unfortunately, this section of the yard we don’t have sprinklers so I have been faithfully watering myself.  (And if you read my prior post, you know how well I water!!)

The sunflowers started from seeds, so I was extra excited to see them popped up! I did it right! Maybe there is gardener in this girl after all? But as you know, sunflowers don’t automatically bloom first the shoot grows super tall and then the beauty happens. When they are growing they are just green shoots and pretty non-descript. I know what they are since I planted them, but to a passerby, they probably look like weeds. Weeds, you know, to match the rest of our yard!!

Speaking of weeds, there was a green shoot that came up in the vicinity of my sunflowers, honestly, I wasn’t entirely sure if it was one of my sunflowers.  But I watered it to be on the safe side, and laughed to myself knowing I was probably watering a weed. (Spoiler alert, I was!!)

This week, I discovered a sad sight, the deer got to my sunflowers. They aren’t even 3 feet tall yet, and all the tops have been bitten off.  After all the love and attention I literally showered on them, now I don’t even know if they can bloom. Were all those special watering trips it all for nothing?

We all have our weeds. And my mamas that are drawn to my blog, I can guess what your weeds are. I have been there.

Mamas, have the deer devoured your sunflowers? Do you find yourself watering the weeds in your life? Are you even able to tell what the weeds are, or do they blend in too well?

It is times like these that I am so grateful to be connected to my gardener, Jesus.  He helps me to recognize when I am watering weeds, and even lets me laugh about it. When the deer come and destroy it, I remain hopeful that there is always next season!

Keep HOPING with me mamas!
