What Will Be Left Standing When You Are Gone?

Have you ever thought about how you will be remembered? What do you want your legacy to be mamas?

This has been something I frequently ponder. In my opinion, this is where parents have it easy. Children come with crystal clear purpose and legacy. They are like legacy in a cake box mix; all the foundational ingredients included. (Yes, I just compared children to cake mix, there is no end to my literary talents!) God has entrusted parents to nurture, shape, and mold the next generation. They have a direct, succinct, and huge responsibility legacy. Parents’ legacies are set in stone; whereas my legacy feels more like Jell-O.

On our last trip to Spain, we went to the archeological site of Acinipo.  This site was first established in the 9th century BC. With the Roman theater built in first century BC. Imagine mamas, BC, before Christ came to Earth! This structure is still standing thousands upon thousands of years later, in the remote countryside of Spain.  Think of all the blood, sweat and tears that went into creating this structure. The precision engineering and back breaking labor.  This ruin has weathered the test of time and remains the oldest standing Roman amphitheater in all of Spain.

Acinipo is not a Roman ruin you stumble across. It is so off the beaten path, you have to be intentional in finding it amongst Spain’s winding country roads. Upon our arrival we were greeted with less than five cars in the gravel parking lot.  Our adventure began navigating up the grassy hill amongst a serene field filled with mysterious rock mounds. The view upon arrival is a magnificently imposing theater with a jaw dropping view of the Spanish countryside. The ruin felt so out of place, like it didn’t belong; but there it stood in awe-inspiring imperfection.

What I learned on our last Spain trip was my most favorite spots were off the beaten path.  It took more effort and inconvenience for these destinations. We had to be intentional in our pursuit. I think the same can be said for life. The most amazing biographies are from the untraditional legacy builders, who walked the road less traveled.

Mamas, for those of us left with empty arms this side of heaven; Acinipo is what our legacy journey looks like.  Our legacy is off the beaten path, and we have to seek it wholeheartedly.  Our only other option is wobble around like Jell-O and hope our legacy sticks to us. But I have found intentionality produces better results.

Whether your legacy direction is firm like stone or flexible like Jell-O, mamas it does exist. You were created with purpose, precision, sweat and tears.  JUST DO SOMETHING.
