I See Bunions

Me: “They gave Jesus bunions.”

HUBBY: “That is the least of His problems”

On a recent dream trip to Paris, we got to visit the Louvre. I walked the halls of this massive museum, completely overwhelmed by the sheer size, architecture, contents and hoards of people.

In this particular unknown wing of the Louvre, I was greeted with a very large portrait of Jesus. How large; like the size of half bathroom, large!  This gigantic piece of artwork took up my whole visual field. I instantly drawn to Jesus’ feet, maybe because they were at my eye level? Of all the intricate details in this painting, I instantly honed in on the bunions!

As I walked the next couple rooms in this wing, I took notice of more bunions; they were featured in almost every painting. Why did all these artists’ subjects have bunions? How bizarre? Coincidental? Normal? Did the artist have bunions? Was he drawing his ailment into each masterpiece? Was he imposing his affliction onto each of his subjects? Perhaps this period in time had higher than normal instances of bunions? Despite my history major background, I don’t recall ever hearing about a bunion epidemic. I remain intrigued to this day.

Did this artist’s own personal ailment impact his work? His life? His perspective? Mamas, does your personal ailment affect your work? Your life? Your perspective?

Mamas, would I see the bunions in your masterpiece?

What do you want your legacy work to say? You are the artist of your life. Ask yourself this mamas, do you want your audience to notice your bunions? Do your bunions take center stage? You have the power to decide what people notice. How many of us need to get our paintbrushes out and revise our masterpieces? Mamas, the choice is yours…
